Calculus, June 1st.

Today we talked about finding volumes for solids of revolution using discs. Then we looked at the different types of integrals at the back of the text and discussed where first year calculus goes from here. In the period after lunch we worked on the practice final exam.

Today was test day. We will start end of year review tomorrow.

Today there was a teacher on call teaching the class. The students started by reviewing the pythagorean theorem. Then they learned how to calculate the surface area and volume of a pyramid.

Today we looked at the areas of triangles, parallelograms and trapazoids. We discussed how these areas could be determined by comparing with a rectangle and then determined some formulas that would help us find these areas using just he base and the height measurements.

Math 9. May 17th

Before lunch we reviewed the differences and similarities between sin cos and tan. We practiced determing which ratio we would use to solve different trigonometry questions.

After lunch we learned how to Solve a triangle. Basically it just means find all the side lengths and angles for a triangle. The most important step is choosing a piece of information you want to find. Once you have chosen use the information you know to make a trigonometric equation and then solve the equation to find the value.

Today we had an assembly during the math period. So the test has been moved back a day. Tomorrow will be review and Project completion.

Today we started by reviewing inverses. Then we went on to look at the derivative and the integral of exponential functions with base e.

Today we got our Integration Tests back.

Today's lesson was on inverse functions, we talked about functions that were one-to-one. We talked about the relationship between the ranges and domains of functions and their inverses.

Today we reviewed Congruent and Similar triangles.

Todays Lesson was on the tangent ratio. We learned:
- How to label the sides of a right triangle with Hypotenuse, Opposite and Adjacent.
- How to use the TAN button on our calculator to find a ratio.
- How to change a ratio back into an angle using the TAN -1 button.

We started the Trigonometry Unit today. We learned about Congruent triangles in the morning. We learned the three ways in which triangles can be classified as congruent. After lunch we learned to find the missing side length in a similar triangle.

Today we talked about Amplitude and Period for Periodic and Sinusoidal functions.

We learned how to work back and forth between graphs and the equation of a sinusoidal function to determine amplitude and Period.

Today we handed in our Integration Assignment.

In class we discussed linear motion problems where students are given the acceleration formula and some intial conditions and from that they find the velocity and position functions. We also used these functions to solve various problems.

Today we worked on using the SinReg application on the graphing calculator to find a Sinusoidal equation for data that seems to be in a wave pattern. Here is the instruction sheet for using your calculator.

Calculus, April 29th

Today we reviewed the integration by substitution questions and then assigned a hand in assignment for the first two sections of chapter five.

In the afternoon we started working with differential equations and received a set of questions, # 1 - 41 odd were assigned for homework.

Today we started learning about the difference between radians and degrees and how the two values are related. We learned to convert back and forth between radian and degree measure.

Today we learned about expanding a squared binomial. The key idea was writing out two sets of brackets and then using FOIL.

Today, before lunch we started with a Stations exercise where we reviewed everything we have covered so far in Chapter 5. Then we discussed factoring trinomials where there is a GCF, the golden rule says, "always factor out any common factors first". We also learned about a special binomial multiplication called a difference of squares.

After lunch we did the Expanding Binomials and Factoring Trinomials Quiz. Then we discussed factoring a Difference of squares.

We went over the second sheet from yesterday in class. We practiced using the TVM solver.

In the second half of class we went to the computer lab and opened the basic loan and investment spreadsheet file. We played around with numbers and looked at how the formulas were made.

Today we reviewed adding and subtracting polynomials. Then we discussed multiplying monomials. Students were regaled with the story of the turtle and scorpion as an analogy for being allowed to listen to ipods while working.

We started Chapter 4 today. We learned about types of polynomials and their degree. We also learned to write polynomial expressions in descending and ascending order.

Calculus

We discussed the curvature of the graphs of functions and how to determine when a graph is curving up or down. We then worked on graphing functions by hand using concavity and monotonicity.

Calculus, April 7th

We learned about monotonicity (yes it was monotonous). This is the characteristic of a function which describes whether it is increasing or decreasing. We also discussed the seven steps we will use to hand graph a function using first and second derivatives.

We talked about inequalities today. There were two main ideas.

1. Treat inequalities the same way you treat an equation when it comes to solving.

2. When you multiply or divide by a negative you need to flip the inequality.

Math 9, mar 31st

We talked about making formulas from tables of values. We looked for patterns in how the y values grew when the x value changes.

Assignment was a worksheet handed out in class.

Calculus, Mar 31st

Derivatives tests were handed back and we went through the questions.

We started looking at critical numbers but did not finish the lesson. This lesson will be finished tomorrow and work will be assigned for the weekend.

Apps 12, Mar 31st

Today was the Vector Lab. We worked on the lab with our partners.

The lab with write up is due tomorrow.

You need: 2 vector analysis sheets with analysis completed.
1 write up explaining your methodology and your description of how things went.

Each school day it is late is a deduction of 10% up to a maximum of 30%.

Apps 12, Mar 30th

Today we learned to add three vectors. These problems will always make right angle triangles so you can use SOHCAHTOA and Pythagorus to solve them.

We started manipulating formulas today to solve for the other variable. It was challenging.

Calculus.

We worked on a practice test. The test for this class is tomorrow. There will be one related rate question on this test. There will also be related rates questions on the test for Chapter 4.

We learned to add vectors using the parallelogram method. We worked with the cosine and sine law. We worked with two types of bearing notation ( 120 deg or E 30 S). It was challenging.

After lunch we worked together on an example of a vector lab type question.

Math 9, mar 25th

We started with a basic word problem quiz that was a summative assessment. After the quiz we learned about rate of work problems and then worked on the assignment.

Apps 12, Mar 25th

Today we talked briefly about the project for this chapter. I described an example but I did not work through it completely as we have not covered some of the necessary math yet. Then we worked on multiplying vectors by scalars. The key element was using a good scale for your original vector and measuring it with a ruler. Then all the other vectors could be drawn by using your scale to convert them into a length. We also used the other edge of the ruler to keep our lines parallel.

Calculus, Mar 25th.

Today we talked about linear approximations. We did not go into it in depth. Then we reviewed all of the related rates homework. Below is the assignment for the weekend. Good luck.

Calculus, Mar 24th

Today we started related rates. We worked on basic problems, discussed taking implicit derivatives when they variable does not appear in the equation (with respect to time for example) and then looked at some problem types.

Apps Math 12, Mar 24th

Today we discussed adding vectors using the pythagorean theorem and trigonometry. It was challenging so we will be doing more of it tomorrow.

Math 9, Mar 24th

Today we looked at Distance/Rate/time problems. We mostly worked with basic conversions however at the end we talked about chase and total distance problems.

We started in the morning reviewing trigonometry. This assignment is not due.

In the afternoon we worked with adding vectors using scale diagrams.
We talked about the difficulty in using the blocks on graph paper as your unit of measure. We decided it was better to measure everything in centimetres.

We reviewed implicit differentiation and then talked about higher order derivatives.

We started by discussing scalars and vectors, we discussed types of values that could be in each category and then we worked on notation. We also discussed bearings.

Today we reviewed derivatives in the following order,

1) basic polynomials,
2) product/quotient rule
3) trig functions
4) chain rule
5) triple chain rule
6) combined product chain rule
7) combined chain rule product rule
8) tangent line to a graph at an x value.

We will review implicit differentiation and the homework from spring break tomorrow.

We went over the answers to the practice test. Then we reviewed or caught up on homework assignments that were not totally complete.

The TEST was pushed back to Thursday by a popular vote.

We spent most of the double block working on our chain rule homework. We were assigned some questions to hand in for marks.

math 9, mar 1st

Today we worked on longer problems involving both similar terms and brackets. This was before lunch.

After lunch we talked about equations with rational or decimal expressions. The key idea was to multiply by a common multiple or a multiple of ten to get an equation with no numerators or decimals. After that we solved the equations as we usually would.

Today we discussed applications of basic derivatives and how the concepts of derivative can apply to real world problems.

We learned about networks and how matrices can be used to represent them. We worked with the square and the cube of a square matrix to determine the number of ways to connect different nodes using different numbers of relays.

Today we learned to solve equations with variables on both sides of the equation. We can now use the variable wind. We also learned to use algebra rockets to expand brackets and simplify equations.

Apps Math 12, Feb 23

Today we reviewed the first probability test and went over the types of questions that will be on the practice test tomorrow.

This "What you should know for the probability unit" sheet has all the types of questions and information that will be covered on the next test.

We Learned about the definition of a derivative and its applications. It was very similar to what we did last Thursday.

We started working on Matrices today. We learned some definitions and then learned how to add and subtract matrices and how to multiply a matrice by a number.

Today we discussed creating equations and solving basic equations using algebra.

Write out all of the equations first.
Then solve for the variable.
Then write out the solution.

We did our limits and functions test.

We discussed finding generic formulas for the slope of a graph.

Today we started the Algebra Unit.

We talked about coefficients, constants, variables and terms.

We practiced evaluating an algebraic expression when the variable is given different values.

We practiced collecting together like terms.

We discussed why time may not actually occur.

Math 9, Feb 15th

We worked on completing the homework that has been assigned in this chapter. We also worked on reviewing for the test that is tomorrow.

Calculus, Feb 15th

We talked about the limit laws. We worked on finding the limits of expressions that would be zero over zero when the value is directly substituted. We had two options today. 1. Factor the numerator and denominator and hopefully cancel the common factor of zero. 2. Use the conjugate for a rational function with square roots and hopefully get a common zero factor that can be eliminated.

Apps 12, February 15th

Lots of people away this morning. We had a quiz on permutations and everyone struggled with it. Then we learned about combinations as compared to permutations (this is extension material).

Calculus, Feb 11th

We reviewed the idea of using points that were closer and closer together to approximate the slope of a tangent line at a point of a function.

The lesson covered the idea of limits, left and right limits, infinite limits and the properties that are necessary for a limit to exist.

Apps 12, Thursday Feb 11th

We started the day with a new package of sheets and discussed permutations with restrictions and repetitions. This is an extension of the actual curriculum.

After lunch we went over the format of the project and people made corrections to their methodology in collecting data.
