Calculus, April 29th

Today we reviewed the integration by substitution questions and then assigned a hand in assignment for the first two sections of chapter five.

In the afternoon we started working with differential equations and received a set of questions, # 1 - 41 odd were assigned for homework.

Apps Math 12, April 29th

Today we started learning about the difference between radians and degrees and how the two values are related. We learned to convert back and forth between radian and degree measure.

Math 9, April 29th

Today we learned about expanding a squared binomial. The key idea was writing out two sets of brackets and then using FOIL.

Math 9, April 27th

Today, before lunch we started with a Stations exercise where we reviewed everything we have covered so far in Chapter 5. Then we discussed factoring trinomials where there is a GCF, the golden rule says, "always factor out any common factors first". We also learned about a special binomial multiplication called a difference of squares.

After lunch we did the Expanding Binomials and Factoring Trinomials Quiz. Then we discussed factoring a Difference of squares.

Calculus, April 27th

Today we learned about integrating by using substitution. We were given an assignment sheet which will be worked on tomorrow in class.

Today we learned to factor trinomials. This is basically like work backwards from the FOIL multiplying we did last week.

Today we began preparing for the retest on Finance. We also worked on our projects.

Chapter 4 tests were handed back and the answers were reviewed. If you want a retest you will need to come in at lunch for some extra review.

We started with a quiz on factor binomials and trinomials. The lesson was about multiplying polynomials with monomials. The two methods we talked about were the "Area" method and the "Rockets" method.

We talked about the Greatest Common Factor of a pair of algebraic expressions. We also discussed the divisibility rules for 2, 3, and 5. Finally we talked about prime numbers.

Today we talked about investment portfolios and average rate of return. We also used the TVM solver to find the effective annual rate. We used one dollar as the PV. Next we talked about mortgages and the cost of owning a home. After lunch we went to the Computer lab and played with the RENTBUY spread sheet.

We talked about Annuities today. We worked on problems where money was withdrawn or paid into investments and loans.

Later we talked about the different advantages and disadvantages to buying a car with a loan or a lease.

Before lunch we finished up with the examples of asymptotes as x approaches pos/neg infinity. We then worked on the assignment.

After lunch we talked about graphing functions with slant asymptotes and then looked at the 7 step process from the book for graphing a function.

We went over the second sheet from yesterday in class. We practiced using the TVM solver.

In the second half of class we went to the computer lab and opened the basic loan and investment spreadsheet file. We played around with numbers and looked at how the formulas were made.

There was no assigned homework today.

Math 9, April 12th

Today we reviewed adding and subtracting polynomials. Then we discussed multiplying monomials. Students were regaled with the story of the turtle and scorpion as an analogy for being allowed to listen to ipods while working.

We started Chapter 4 today. We learned about types of polynomials and their degree. We also learned to write polynomial expressions in descending and ascending order.

Calculus

We discussed the curvature of the graphs of functions and how to determine when a graph is curving up or down. We then worked on graphing functions by hand using concavity and monotonicity.

We did our Vectors retest this morning. We start on Finance tomorrow.

We learned about monotonicity (yes it was monotonous). This is the characteristic of a function which describes whether it is increasing or decreasing. We also discussed the seven steps we will use to hand graph a function using first and second derivatives.

After that we started getting ready for chapter 4 by reviewing adding and subtracting similar terms.

Today we discussed the mean value theorem.

We talked about inequalities today. There were two main ideas.

1. Treat inequalities the same way you treat an equation when it comes to solving.

2. When you multiply or divide by a negative you need to flip the inequality.
